Candles and cafes don’t seem like the most likely pairing, but who can complain about tender slow braised beef tongue and seared scallop in a space that smells subtly of flowers? After opening a few cafes around the city, local aromatic product brand Karmakamet established themselves as a culinary brand with the opening of Karmakamet Diner, their first full-scale restaurant. In a quiet spot off bustling Sukhumvit Road in Phrom Phong, old medicine cupboard-like walls, tables filled with Chinese perfume bottles and old newspaper placemats decorate a space that is bursting with charm. Here, meticulously plated dishes are just as beautiful as they are tasty. Like the less-simple-than-it-sounds salmon and black sticky rice, which is made up of smokey coconut-spiced black sticky rice blinis topped with succulent salmon tartare. For a finisher, go for the flavour bending old-fashioned glazed doughnut with Camembert cheese and a side of punchy vanilla ice cream.
